Taylor Lowder is a kind girl and a fierce fighter. While battling two very challenging childhood diseases, Taylor works tirelessly to optimize her health while generously helping others.
At just 8 years old, Taylor was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Suddenly, her life was filled with testing her blood glucose with painful finger pricks every few hours, elaborate carbohydrate counting, and complex math calculations down to the hundredth decimal—requirements to eat and administer insulin to maintain her blood glucose level. With advancements in medical technology, Taylor now has a glucose monitor working in tandem with her insulin pump to maintain her blood glucose levels.
Two years later, at the start of the pandemic, once again, Taylor found herself at the hospital battling a new threat— suffering from debilitating tiredness, bloodshot eyes and crippling pain that pulsed through her abdomen with nothing to relieve it. She faced yet another challenging autoimmune disease diagnosis: Crohn’s disease.
Taylor met the challenge, embracing a strict diet that included a specific list of healthy foods while eliminating gluten, most dairy, processed foods, sweeteners (except for honey), dyes, preservatives, seed oils, and most starches. This regimen provided relief from her symptoms, but knowing that she couldn’t manage the inflammation alone, Taylor started medication that changed her life. Thanks to Dr. Marla Dubinsky, pediatric gastroenterologist, and her incredible team; Dr. Christopher Amoruso, nutritionist; and Crohn’s medication that works for her; Taylor is in remission!
Now, 15 years old, Taylor is a well-rounded, dedicated student with much compassion. She is an honors student, having earned a spot in a specialized high school with a focus on science and technology. Her academic performance and passion for STEM led to her selection for Stockton University’s Tech Trek program for girls, one of only forty selected from her state, and Pfizer’s Growing STEM Futures program, both aimed at fostering future careers in science and technology. Her all-female coding team created an app to support victims of domestic violence for the Congressional App Challenge and advanced to the Technovation Girls App Challenge national semifinals.
Outside of the classroom, Taylor plays tennis year-round and is a member of her high school tennis team. A passionate artist, she especially loves drawing fashion illustrations and enjoys playing cello in the orchestra. In her free time, she is a member of Hand-In-Hand, a school club dedicated to supporting students with special needs. In addition, she volunteers as a summer camp counselor for newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic children inspiring them to see that there are no limits to what you can achieve living with not only Type 1 diabetes, but Crohn’s disease. Taylor feels empowered to take on Crohn’s disease while managing her diabetes because of the excellent care and support she has received from her endocrinologist, Dr. Natasha Leibel, and her wonderful staff.
Having experienced firsthand the impact of those dedicated to advancing science and medical technology, Taylor is deeply motivated to improve the lives of others affected by Crohn’s & ulcerative colitis. She is committed to sharing her journey to inspire action in the search for a cure.
Taylor is the 2025 Rising Star Award recipient of Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Greater New York Chapter. Click HERE to make a donation in Taylor’s honor.
